Setting
The story of Attack on Titan centers on a civilization inside three circular walls. According to the knowledge propagated locally, it is the last surviving vestige of human civilization. Its inhabitants, known as Eldians, have been led to believe that over one hundred years ago, humanity was driven to the brink of extinction after the emergence of humanoid giants called Titans, who attack and eat humans on sight. The last remnants of humanity retreated behind three concentric walls and enjoyed roughly a century of peace. Within the walls, the thought of venturing outside is strongly frowned upon and discouraged. To combat Titans, the country's military employs Vertical Maneuvering Equipment (VME), also called Omni-Directional Maneuvering Gear (ODM Gear)—a set of waist-mounted grappling hooks and gas-powered propulsion enabling mobility in three dimensions. Swords made of ultrahard steel are used in conjunction with the gear, and eventually rocket launcher–like weapons called Thunder Spears are developed.
There are different types of Titans. Pure Titans are the weakest and most generic, whose behavior is easy to predict, making them easy to kill. Abnormal Titans are Pure Titans whose behavior is more difficult to predict, making them far more dangerous. The Nine Titans, also known as Titan Shifters (Attack, Colossal, Armored, Female, Beast, Jaw, Cart, War Hammer, and Founding), are the strongest Titans; each is able to shift back and forth between human and Titan form to access their Titan's abilities. Many Titan Shifters possess the ability to harden certain parts of their bodies at will, typically in order to make them virtually impenetrable, or to strengthen their blows during combat.
Pure Titans are created by injecting Eldians with Titan spinal fluid. If a Pure Titan eats the human body of a person who possesses one of the Nine Titans, said Eldian will revert to human form and gain that Shifter's powers, whereupon they are cursed to live only 13 more years. If their powers are not inherited by another Eldian before their death, their powers will be inherited by an Eldian baby born shortly thereafter, regardless of distance or blood-relations. As the story progresses, the true nature of the Titans and the existence of civilization outside the walls is revealed.
Plot
Eren Yeager is a boy who lives in the town of Shiganshina, located on the outermost of three circular walls which protect their inhabitants from Titans. In the year 845, the first wall, Wall Maria, is breached by two new types of Titans, the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan. During the incident, Eren's mother is eaten by a Smiling Titan while Eren escapes. He swears revenge on all Titans and enlists in the military along with his childhood friends Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert.
Five years after Shiganshina's fall, the Colossal Titan attacks the city of Trost, located in the second innermost wall, Wall Rose. Eren helps to successfully defend the city after he discovers a mysterious ability to turn himself into a sentient Attack Titan. Additionally, he regains memories of his father Grisha Yeager giving him this ability shortly after the fall of Wall Maria, and telling him that the truth about their world can be found in their basement in Shiganshina. These events draw the attention of the Survey Corps and their commander, Erwin Smith, who intend to use his power to reclaim Wall Maria and reach the Yeagers' basement. Eren, Mikasa, and Armin are transferred to the Special Operations Squad, under the care of Levi Ackerman and Hange Zoë. During an expedition into the forest between the walls, Eren and his companions encounter a sentient Female Titan, whom they later expose as their fellow military comrade Annie Leonhart. With help from his friends, Eren fights and defeats Annie, who encases herself in crystal and is put in custody. After the fight, it is discovered that there are Titans lying dormant within the walls, known as Wall Titans.
Shortly thereafter, Pure Titans mysteriously appear within Wall Rose with no evidence of how they got in, accompanied by the sentient Beast Titan. Ymir, one of the new Survey Corps graduates, reveals that she can transform into the sentient Jaw Titan, while Ymir's close friend Krista Lenz reveals herself as Historia Reiss, a member of the royal family. Two other members of the Survey Corps, Reiner Braun and Bertholt Hoover, reveal themselves as the Armored and Colossal Titan respectively. They attempt to kidnap Eren and Ymir, but fail. In the ensuing battle, Eren discovers another power within himself called "the Coordinate", that allows him to control other Titans, which he uses to kill the Smiling Titan and send a horde of Pure Titans to attack Reiner and Bertholt. This forces the two to escape, whereupon Ymir willingly flees with them, offering herself as sacrifice to prevent Historia from being targeted by the enemy. In the aftermath of these events, it is determined that the Pure Titans who suddenly appeared within Wall Rose were the inhabitants of various villages within Wall Rose, who had in some way been transformed into Titans. This leads the characters to the conclusion that all Pure Titans are, in fact, transformed human beings.
Eren and his friends join Levi Squad while the Survey Corps is targeted by the Military Police led by Kenny Ackerman, Levi's uncle. In the occasion, they discover that by transforming into a Pure Titan via a serum made of Titan spinal fluid and eating another Titan shifter, a person can gain its abilities, and that Historia and her father, Rod Reiss, are the only surviving members of the royal bloodline. Rod kidnaps Eren because he is in possession of the Founding Titan, obtained by his father Grisha upon eating Frieda Reiss (Historia's half-sister), and by Eren through eating his father. Rod tries to convince Historia to allow herself to be transformed into a Titan, so she can eat Eren and regain the Founder's power. After Historia refuses and breaks Rod's vial of spinal fluid, Rod attempts to consume the serum himself, transforming into a monstrously large Abnormal Titan and mortally wounding Kenny; he is then killed by Historia (with the help of the Survey Corps), who is thereafter declared Queen.
Having resolved the political unrest, the Survey Corps lead a successful operation to recapture Shiganshina, fighting the Beast, Colossal, Armored, and Cart Titans but suffering massive casualties, wherein Erwin dies in a suicide run against the Beast Titan, and Armin gains ownership of the Colossal Titan when Levi injects him with a serum given by Kenny, causing Armin to eat Bertholt. Eren and his companions return to his childhood home, where they discover the truth of their world: they are actually Eldians, sworn enemies of the conquering Marleyans who were enclosed within the walls after the original King Karl Fritz fled from the war. They are not the last humans as they were told, but rather an enclosed sect of Eldians on an isolated island called Paradis. Because they are "Subjects of Ymir" who can be turned into Titans by being injected with Titan spinal fluid, the Eldians continue to be oppressed by Marley. In the year after the battle of Shiganshina, the Survey Corps kill all of the remaining Pure Titans on the island.

Three years later, the Survey Corps launch an attack against the Marleyan capital of Liberio, orchestrated by Eren and his half-brother Zeke, who is the owner of the Beast Titan. Eren kills Willy Tybur, an Eldian who (along with his family) had been controlling Marley from the shadows and gains ownership of the War Hammer Titan after eating its previous owner, Willy's sister Lara. Eren is imprisoned for acting against orders but escapes with a faction of extremist Paradis soldiers called the Yeagerists. Zeke is kept in Levi's custody but manages to escape, severely injuring but not killing him. Marley's air fleet, led by Reiner, launch an invasion of Paradis, and chaos breaks out in the ensuing battle. Eren and Zeke reunite, which leads them to the Paths—a series of atemporal gateways connecting all Eldians through time and space. There, they meet the consciousness of Ymir Fritz—the original Titan—whose tortured past led to her imprisonment within the Paths for thousands of years. Zeke attempts to convince Ymir to fulfill his wish to stop the Subjects of Ymir from reproducing via mass sterilization. Eren convinces Ymir to use her power to bring about the Rumbling—unleashing thousands of Wall Titans kept within Paradis's walls and leading them on a genocidal march to kill everyone outside the island.
The Survey Corps ally with remaining Marleyan forces, including Reiner and a now-freed Annie to stop Eren, and they defeat the Yeagerists before confronting Eren, though many are killed, including Hange. Levi kills Zeke and Mikasa kills Eren, which causes the mysterious creature that is the source of all Titans' powers to die and the power of the Titans to vanish, reverting all Titans to human form, and stripping the Titan Shifters of their powers, thereby freeing all Eldians from the curse. His death also releases memory blocks that he put on his friends, revealing that what transpired was part of Eren's plan to spare twenty percent of humanity, with Armin, Levi, Mikasa, and the others being recognized as heroes in the eyes of the world for killing him and stopping the Rumbling. Three years later, as Paradis and the rest of the world rebuilds, Armin and his allies begin peace negotiations led by Queen Historia. Mikasa buries Eren underneath a tree on a hill near Shiganshina District. The tree grows over time to resemble the one where the organism that granted Ymir her Titan power lived. An unspecified amount of time after Mikasa's death from old age, a modernized Shiganshina is reduced to rubble in a war. The series ends with a boy and his dog approaching the tree, which has now become surrounded by wilderness.

Univers
Cent ans avant le début des évènements du manga, des créatures géantes humanoïdes mangeuses d'hommes nommées Titans (巨人, Kyojin?) apparaissent subitement et anéantissent presque l’humanité. Ces créatures, d'entre trois et quinze mètres de haut (avec quelques exceptions), ne dévorent que les humains, et uniquement par instinct de prédation, puisqu'ils ne possèdent pas de système digestif et puisent leur énergie dans la lumière du soleil. Les Titans n'ont pas d'organes génitaux, ont la peau dure, des capacités régénératrices et ne peuvent être tués que par une incision profonde à la base de la nuque.
Pour se protéger, l’humanité vit entourée par trois murs concentriques de cinquante mètres de haut, distants les uns des autres d’une centaine de kilomètres. Le mur extérieur est le Mur Maria (ウォール・マリア, Wōru Maria?), l’intermédiaire est le Mur Rose (ウォール・ローゼ, Wōru Rōze?) et le central est le Mur Sina (ウォール・シーナ, Wōru Shīna?). Afin de pouvoir se défendre plus facilement et efficacement, et pour réduire les coûts de la défense, quatre districts en forme de demi-cercles ont été construits sur chacun des murs à chacun des points cardinaux. Ils permettent aux membres d’une garnison d’attirer les titans à un même endroit afin de les attaquer à l’aide de canons. Grâce à l’altitude supérieure du mur central, de nombreux cours d’eau irriguent la zone dans son intégralité, ce qui permet à l’humanité de ne manquer ni de ressources minérales, ni de gaz naturel. Ces trois murs sont considérés comme sacrés dans certains cultes, en renvoyant à trois déesses protectrices.
La lutte contre les Titans et la protection de la population est menée par une armée répartie en trois factions : le bataillon d'exploration, la garnison et les brigades spéciales. Le bataillon d’exploration (調査兵団, Chōsa Heidan?) effectue des expéditions de reconquête de territoires à l’extérieur des murs. Du fait du faible taux de réussite de ces missions, l'existence du bataillon d'exploration est souvent critiquée par le peuple. La garnison (駐屯兵団, Chūton Heidan?) s’occupe de la protection des murs et des habitants des villes. Enfin, les brigades spéciales (憲兵団, Kenpeidan?) opèrent sous l’autorité royale dans des conditions de vie prospères et doivent maintenir la paix à l'intérieur des murs. Seules les dix premières recrues de chaque brigade d'entraînement reçoivent le privilège de demander une affectation au sein des brigades spéciales. Afin d’accéder au point faible des Titans, les soldats utilisent des lames et des équipements de manœuvres tridimensionnelles (立体 機動 装置, Rittai kidō sotchi?) qui leur permettent de se déplacer rapidement dans trois dimensions. Bien qu’ils permettent une grande mobilité à un utilisateur expérimenté, ils entraînent un grand risque de surcharge des muscles et nécessitent donc une condition physique particulière et un sens de l’équilibre maîtrisé. Les soldats sont soumis à un entraînement très rude.
On apprend plus tard que les Titans sont apparus il y a environ 2 000 ans, lorsqu'une jeune femme nommée Ymir Fritz (ユミル・フリッツ, Yumiru Furittsu?) est devenue le premier géant de l'histoire en obtenant le pouvoir du Titan originel (始祖の巨人, Shiso no Kyojin?). À la mort d'Ymir, son pouvoir a été divisé en neuf, donnant naissance à neuf Titans primordiaux, chacun possesseur d'un pouvoir du Titan (巨人の力, Kyojin no chikara?) qui peut être transféré aux membres du peuple d'Ymir. Grâce à ce pouvoir, ce peuple a conquis le monde pour devenir le grand empire d'Eldia (エルディア, Erudia?). La famille Fritz — avec le pouvoir du Titan fondateur entre ses mains — a gouverné le monde jusqu'à l'époque du 145e roi d'Eldia, nommé Karl Fritz (カール・フリッツ, Kāru Furittsu?) qui, après la Grande Guerre des Titans, a décidé de mettre fin à l'empire d'Eldia, conduisant nombre de ses habitants vers une île appelée Paradis (パラディ島, Paradi-tō?). Cependant, tous les Eldiens n'ont pas pu ou voulu rejoindre l'île et sont restés sur le continent. Ils ont alors été soumis par le nouvel empire de Mahr (マーレ, Māre?) qui les a placés dans des ghettos en les traitant comme des êtres inférieurs à cause de leurs crimes passés. L'empire les a par la suite exploités en les utilisant comme des armes de destruction massive pendant les guerres en les transformant de force en titans .
De son côté, en atteignant Paradis, le roi Fritz a utilisé le pouvoir du Titan originel — également connu sous le terme d'Axe (座標, Zahyō?) — afin de faire construire les trois grands murs concentriques à des titans de 50 mètres. Il a par la suite effacé la mémoire des habitants, leur faisant oublier les guerres passées et l'empire de Mahr. Toutes ces actions ont été menées dans le but supposé de les protéger des maux extérieurs, de les empêcher de quitter les murs en leur faisant croire qu'ils étaient les derniers survivants de l'humanité. Fritz est resté le roi des murs et a changé le nom de sa famille pour Reiss. Ses descendants ont régné dans l'ombre en utilisant le pouvoir du Titan originel pendant plus de cent ans.
Personnages
L’histoire se centre sur les personnages d’Eren Jäger, Mikasa Ackerman et Armin Arlelt (et, dans la seconde partie de l'histoire, de Reiner Braun). D'autres jouent aussi un rôle important, comme les membres de la 104e brigade d’entraînement, du bataillon d’exploration ou encore de la garnison, tout comme certains géants comme le Titan colossal, le Titan bestial, le Titan féminin ou le Titan cuirassé.
Eren Jäger (エレン・イェーガー, Eren Yēgā?)
Eren est le héros. Il est impulsif, idéaliste, déterminé et violent. Enfant, sa mère se fait dévorer sous ses yeux par un Titan ; depuis, il rêve de les anéantir. À première vue, il ne possède pas de talent particulier à part le fait d'être doué au combat au corps à corps, et d'avoir une volonté d’acier.
Mikasa Ackerman (ミカサ・アッカーマン, Mikasa Akkāman?)
Mikasa est la dernière survivante d’un clan oriental. Enfant, elle a été sauvée puis adoptée par Eren et sa famille. Elle s’est depuis jurée de le protéger quelle que soit la situation. Classée première de sa promotion puis membre du bataillon d'exploration, elle est considérée comme un génie et garde toujours son sang-froid, sauf lorsqu'Eren est en danger.
Armin Arlelt (アルミン・アルレルト, Arumin Arureruto?)
Armin est le meilleur ami d’Eren. Bien qu’il soit assez faible physiquement, il possède une intelligence exceptionnelle qui fait de lui un stratège hors du commun. Également membre du bataillon d'exploration, il est capable d'élaborer des tactiques ingénieuses même dans des situations critiques, ce qui sauvera des soldats à de multiples reprises.
Livaï (リヴァイ, Rivai?, également écrit Rivaille et Levi)
Souvent désigné comme le Caporal-Chef Livaï (リヴァイ兵長, Rivai Heichō?), il est le chef de l'Escouade tactique au sein du Bataillon d'exploration. Dans l'épisode Le caporal Livaï, il est dit que c'est le meilleur soldat que l'humanité ait jamais connu.
Histoire
Eren Jäger, un petit garçon de dix ans, mène une existence paisible avec ses parents et sa sœur adoptive Mikasa dans le district de Shiganshina, au sud du mur Maria. Mais, alors que les humains n'ont pas aperçu de Titans aux abords du district depuis un siècle, la ville est attaquée par un Titan de 60 mètres, le Titan Colossal, qui ouvre une brèche dans le mur contre la ville. Des Titans se déversent alors dans les rues, dévorant tous les humains qu'ils croisent. Eren et Mikasa sont témoins de la mort de la mère d'Eren, qui, piégée sous un rocher s'étant écrasé sur sa maison, se fait dévorer sous leurs yeux. Un autre Titan, le Titan Cuirassé fait à son tour son apparition, et, aidé de son blindage, perce le mur Maria, permettant aux Titans d'envahir tout l'espace compris entre les murs Rose et Maria. Eren et Mikasa réussissent tout de même à s'enfuir de la ville avant qu'il ne soit trop tard, avec leur ami Armin Arlet. Le père d'Eren, le docteur Grisha, est absent de la ville ce jour-là et est porté disparu. Il apparaît cependant à Eren dans la nuit et lui confie la clé du sous-sol de leur maison, dont il lui dit qu'elle lui révélera la vérité sur les Titans et sur les murs. À la suite de cette journée funeste, Eren décide de se venger et jure de tuer tous les Titans jusqu'au dernier en intégrant le bataillon d'exploration, l'un des trois corps de l'armée et spécialisé dans le combat contre les Titans.

⚪️ Point à prendre en considération : je suis nul dans bon nombre de jeux vidéos. Et celui-là ne fait pas exception :).

⚪️ Je ne rentre pas trop dans les détails car je ne maîtrise pas ce jeu (je ne suis pas parvenu à en occire un seul :)), il est très évolué, et je ne dispose pas d'assez de temps pour un test sérieux. Néanmoins je peux vous livrer mes premières impressions.
🟢️ La réalisation est de très grande qualité (nombreux effets graphiques activables ou non, nombreux types de contrôles, soin apporté à l'interface, ...).
🟢️ Les possibilités de paramétrages sont très nombreuses, on peut y jouer en solo ou en multi, avec différents rôles et personnages, le contenu est nombreux (cartes, modes) et de qualité.
🟢️ Je pense qu'il vaut mieux s'entraîner un peu en solo (il offre un didacticiel et l'on peut ajuster le niveau de jeu) avant de s'attaquer au multi-joueur. Ou alors il faut rester bien à l'abri et à distance derrière les joueurs :)).

🟢️ Le jeu offre déjà un bon gameplay en solo, et l'on devine bien son potentiel en multi-joueur : s'attaquer aux géants à plusieurs, car si ces géants semblent lents au 1er abord, à l'usage il font de grands pas et finissent par vous rattraper si vous n'allez pas vous cacher ou grimper aux arbres, pour ensuite soit vous écraser soit vous dévorer. Âmes sensibles s'abstenir.
